Join us Thursday, February 1st to Monday, February 5th in the quaint gold rush town of Grass Valley, an easy one-hour drive northeast from Sacramento. It will be four nights and three days of writing bliss; you’ll be surrounded by the contagious word-mojo of other authors. And it will be magic!
The #WordsOnThePage Retreat is at the historic Holbrooke Hotel, first built in 1855, then rebuilt in 1862 after a fire burnt down most of the town. It’s a special place, filled with history – presidents, famous performers and athletes, infamous bandits, and even Mark Twain, have all stayed at the Holbrooke Hotel.
We’ve reserved all of the rooms so we’ll have the run of the place. With a beautiful library/seating area, a saloon, a fine-dining restaurant, and a large meeting room just for us, you’ll never have to leave the hotel. However, if you like to get out and about, Grass Valley and nearby Nevada City have unique shopping, art galleries, museums, restaurants, and delicious home-town diners. There’re also gold mines, wineries, and an old pioneer cemetery a short drive away. They are adorable towns, guaranteed to help the creative juices flow!
Reserve your space now! Attendee numbers are limited.
Only $50 to attend the retreat!
The cost of the retreat is an affordable $50 (cost of room is separate).
- Welcome packet with suggested places to visit and things to do (when not writing, of course!)
- Wine and cheese welcome reception Thursday night
- Writing spaces conducive to creativity including an old parlor/seating area and a conference room reserved just for us
- Coffee, tea, and snacks reserved throughout the day
- Continental breakfast Friday-Monday for those staying at the Holbrooke
There are two housing options:
STAY AT THE HOLBROOKE HOTEL
for the full experience of the #WordsOnThePage Retreat! The historic rooms are unique and quaint, and the price is right! Nightly cost for the rooms range from $100 up to $170. Make sure to call for a reservation ASAP. To make a reservation, contact the Holbrooke Hotel directly and mention SFA-RWA #WordsOnThePage Retreat.
Reservations must be made over the phone: 530-273-1353.
Note: The Holbrooke Hotel is purportedly haunted. Rooms #8, #9, #3, and #14 are the rooms the front desk say are “active”. However, we have never experienced anything at the hotel. Whether that’s a relief or a disappointment, that’s for you to say. 🙂
STAY AT ANOTHER HOTEL IN THE AREA as Grass Valley has many nice places to stay, some a bit cheaper and some more expensive than the Holbrooke. Registration for the #WordsOnThePage Retreat is open to all writers no matter where they stay.
SFA is not responsible for any cancellation fees charged by the Holbrooke Hotel or by any other rooming options. Check cancellation policies carefully before making room reservations.
Cancellations before December 31st: full refund of $50
Cancellations between January 1st and February 1st: partial refund of $25
No-shows forfeit full registration fee
This retreat is sponsored by the San Francisco Area of Romance Writers of America. However, registrants do not have to be RWA members. This retreat is open to all writers.
You may bring a significant other, but in order to attend the Thursday Wlecome Reception and writing sessions, they must register for the retreat.
There are twenty-six rooms at the Holbrooke Hotel, including eight rooms in the historic Purcell House, a detached building next to the Holbrooke.
